AAUW BOARD MEETING
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2009
NEWLIFE COOPERTIVE
President Pauline Krieger called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.
Present at the meeting: Pauline Krieger, Yalanda Rishovd, Rosemary Bradshaw,

Announcements:
- The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 has been passed by both houses in Washington D.C., and signed by the President. AAUW worked very diligently to pass this important piece of legislation. There is more information and photos of the signing ceremony on the AAUW website.
- Lilly Ledbetter will speak at the AAUW National Convention in ST. Louis in June.
- The schedule for the National Convention and registration forms were available at the meeting.
- Pauline Krieger shared the picture of Pauline Utzinger that was in the Rochester Post Bulletin.
- The Red Wing Branch of AAUW has invited area branches to a regional meeting to be held on March 14, 2009 in Red Wing. The topic of the meeting is Mission in Motion.
- President Pauline Krieger will send a letter on behalf of our Branch to Dr. Lehmkuhle to congratulate him on becoming the new president of the Diversity Council
- President Pauline Krieger reported that she received information from the State level that AAUW Minnesota has contracted with Grasstops to provide a presence at the Minnesota Legislature to monitor and advocate for issues important to AAUW.
- Our Branch has received in invitation from Debbie Eddy, regional director of the American Heart Association, for the Go Red luncheon on Thursday, February 26, 2009.
Secretary’s Report: The report was approved as corrected.
Treasure’s Report: Mona Price presented the report to the Board.
Membership:
- Membership packets have been sent to 6 prospective members.
- There have been no new members added to our branch membership.
- There was discussion about different ways to get membership information. Debbie Lloyd will be contacted and requested to update information on the website.
- Stacy Haugen and Rosemary Bradshaw reported that our branch would have a booth at the World Festival. The Festival will be held on April 10th and 11th at Mayo High School. Rosemary requested that brochures and other information about AAUW be gathered to have available at the booth to share with the public and prospective members. A sheet was passed for board members to sign up to help at the booth during the Festival. There will be more information in the newsletter.
Program:
- The General Meeting will be held on Saturday morning, February 21, at Charter House, in the Northview Room. The Meeting and Program will begin at 10:00 a.m. The program this month will be presented by Jean Michaels, who will speak about the issues that face women in today’s world- the challenges and opportunities that women face each day. The Northland Mountain Dulcimer group will perform for members attending the meeting.
- Yalanda Rishovd shared information regarding upcoming programs.
Newsletter/Publicity:
- Please get information to Diane Hellie.
Ways and Means:
- Alice Laudon reported on the Timber Lodge Event. This will take place on April 27th, 2009. Those members dining at Timber Lodge restaurant that day will have the opportunity to have a portion of their bill donated to AAUW. Those wishing to donate, members or others, must indicate to the Timber Lodge staff that they are dining in support of AAUW. There will be informational fliers available at the General Meeting and an e-mail will be sent out to members to remind them about this opportunity. The Board discussed how the proceeds from this event would be used for the Branch.
Strategic Plan:
- Kay Morcomb reported on the updated plan. The board discussed ways to make the report available to members: copies of the Plan could be available at the General Meeting, put on the website and mailed to members along with the Newsletter.
Projects:
- Ione Schloegel reported on the Beat the Odds banquet. This was a great event and honored very worthy recipients.
- Ione also reported that College Is Possible will be held this Saturday, February 7th, at the University Center Rochester. 45 students have signed up to participate in the event as of Monday, February 2nd.
Study Groups:
- Diane Hellie and Joyce Wenz extend an invitation to members on behalf of the Evening Reading Group. Members are invited to attend the Girl Scout Cookie Creation event at the Radisson Plaza Hotel on Wednesday, March 25th. The group will then proceed on to the Repertory Theater to see a production of the play “Third”. Diane will have more information in the newsletter.
- Suzanne Dinnusson reported that the first group of AAUW volunteers would start working tomorrow at the Salvation Army thrift store. Watch the newsletter, or contact Suzanne for more information.
Committee Reports:
- Ardis Jenkins reported on the Legal Advocacy fundraisers: the Silent Auction at the Fall General meeting and Book Sale at the May buffet.
- Kay Morcomb reported on the proposed National By-Laws. These can be found on the website. At this website, frequently asked questions are answered. If the new By-Laws are adopted, there will be many changes involved with the new restructuring of the organization. The organization will be streamlined at the national, regional, state and local level. There will be changes in membership requirements and how members vote. Part of the dues members pay may become tax deductible. The proposed By-Laws will be voted on at the convention in St. Louis in June.
- Kay Morcomb reported on the progress of the Nominating Committee. There are still positions to be filled.
- Beth Nienow reported on the Educational Foundation banquet in March. The members are asked to make their reservations by March 16. The cost is $20.00. Breanna Bly will be the speaker at the luncheon.
Old Business:
- The History Center of Olmsted County has the same phone number as our AAUW Branch. They have been taking phone calls for our group, as they have for other groups. They are no longer willing to do this. They will continue to be the repository for our historical archives. Kay Morcomb moved that we donate $xxx.xx to the History Center of Olmsted County. This motion was voted down. Mona Price moved that we give $xxx.xx as an honorarium to the History Center. Ione Schloegel seconded the motion and it was passed unanimously.
New Business:
- Mona Price moved that the funds from the Timber Lodge fundraiser be used for community projects such as Beat the Odds and College Is Possible. Rosemary Bradshaw seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Kay Morcomb moved that the meeting be adjourned. Yalanda Rishovd seconded the motion. The
meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Pauline Krieger at 7:07 p.m.
Present: Pauline Krieger, Edi Hollenhorst, Barbra Cain, Rosemary Bradshaw, Stacy Haugen, Nancy Brubaker, Beth Nienow, Ardis Jenkins, Barbra Swart,

Excused: Yalanda Rishovd, Kathy Lawrence, Debbie Lloyd, Diane Hellie, Joyce Wenz
Announcements: The board extended its sincere sympathies to Debbie Lloyd on the death of her sister-in-law
Pauline gave board members on update on Pauline Utzinger, and how her recuperation is coming along
The board members were encouraged to take a pamphlet on voting records for our information.
Secretary's Report: Ione Schloegel made the motion to approve the September minutes as corrected. Nancy Brubaker seconded the motion. The
motion was approved unanimously. There was discussion about posting meeting minutes, financial reports, pictures from
meetings and activities on the web site.
Treasurer's Report: Contact Pauline for information
Audit Report: Barb Swart gave the following report on the audit of the budget: The audit of the financial status of the Rochester Branch
AAUW for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, has been completed. Based upon my review of the financial records
and supporting documents submitted by the treasurer and membership treasurer, it appears that the annual financial
report properly shows the branch's financial status.
Barb also reported that the money given by Nancy Selby to cover the cost of the bulletin is now gone. Barb has sent her a care to
thank her for her generous gift.
Finance Report: Contact Pauline for information
Special Reports: Pauline Krieger and Beth Nienow reported on the State Workshop they attended in Burnsville. Beth reported on sessions on
membership and programming. There was information on mission-based programming, recruitment through campus connections,
goal setting, and other activities to enhance the work of the branch. Pauline reported on sessions on finance and by-laws. Pauline
reported that we do many of the things presented by Sue Grove at the workshop.
Program: The State Co-Presidents will be our guests at the October General Meeting. The meeting will be held Wednesday, October 15, at 7:00
p.m. at Charter House. Former 1st District Congressman Tim Penny will be speaking on Bioscience-What is it? Ione Schloegel made the
motion that postcards be sent to members regarding the meeting. Barb Cain seconded the motion. The motion was approved
unanimously. Martha Holton will act as hostess at the Charter House entrance. Yalanda is organizing refreshments. There was also
discussion about having board members join the Co-Presidents for dinner. Pauline will be sending board members more information.
Membership: Rosemary and Stacy reported that there were new members recruited at the September meeting. An invitation to join our Branch as
been extended to the new Director of Quarry Hill Nature Center. There are 6-7 possibilities for new members.
There is the possibility to be a part of the booth for the College of St. Mary's at the Mayo College Fair in the spring. There is an
organizational meeting on Wednesday (Oct. 14). We will need to have someone attend to get information.
Newsletter: Please get information to Diane Hellie by Friday
Ways and Means: Alice Laudon will announce at the General meeting that there will be a sign up sheet to volunteer to sell coupon books, and that we
need to sell more coupon books.
Barb Knutson will let us know about Apache Mall's Day of Giving. She is also checking with Timber Lodge about another fund raiser.
Study Groups: Suggestions were elicited for good book presenters. Watch the bulletin for the opportunity to attend the theater presentation of
"Third" in March.
Education Foundation: Beth Nienow requested assistance in deciding on a speaker for the March Luncheon
Beth expressed her thanks for the contributions made at the September General Meeting
Nancy Brubaker shared a copy of the Napal Social Services Newsletter
Yalanda Rishovd has sent a Thank you note to Chancellor Lehmkuhle for his enthusiastic and informative presentation at the September General Meeting
The Boys and Girls club would like to give a presentation to our group- the group felt a luncheon meeting next year would be the best forum for their presentation
Information was shared about the Homework Assistance Program at the Public Library. They are looking for volunteers.
Announcements:
- Evening Rapport will meet on Monday, Oct, 27th at Somerby's in Byron. Carpooling at 5 p.m. at Barlow Plaza by the liquor store. Bring yourself and a
guest!
- The Evening Rapport dinner in December will take the place of a general meeting.
- The speaker at the November General meeting will be Kirstin Meisner Limberg on the topic: "The Day the Suffrage Battle was won".
- There were 54 at the September General Meeting.

AAUW EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. at Realife Cooperative
Announcements:
- The State Association Fall Conference will be held in Burnsville on Saturday,
September 27. Pauline Krieger would like board members to attend.
Contact her for more information.
- The Co-Presidents of the State Association will be at our October Meeting.
- The Nominating Committee is looking for names of members who would be interested
in holding office at the Branch, or even the State level.
- Diane Hellie shared a letter from Namrata Damle, who won an award at the Regional
Science Fair for the Best Project presented by a female.
- Pauline Ultzinger is at Maple Manor recuperating from surgery.
Secretary's Report:
- The report was approved as corrected.
Treasurer's Report:
- Nancy Brubaker reviewed the August 31, 2008 financial report. For further
information contact Pauline or Nancy.
Membership:
- There have been 5 Membership packets sent to prospective members, inviting them to
join our Branch.
- There will be a table at the Branch Meeting for Membership in order to pay dues if
necessary, or offer information to prospective
members at the meeting as a guest.
Program:
- The September Branch meeting is next Wednesday at University Square on the fourth
floor. Hostesses will be available to direct the members
as they arrive for the meeting. Each Interest Group will have a table set up to provide
information and registration for their group. The business meeting will
begin at 7:00, and the speaker will be at 7:30.
- There was discussion about the other Programs coming up this year.
Newsletter/Publicity:
- Information for the newsletter should be in to Diane Hellie by Friday.
- The October Newsletter should have information about the nominating committee
looking for members who would like to hold office.
These names for local, and even State Branch positions, should be given to Kay
Morcomb, or Sharon Brodhum.
- Posters about AAUW, and membershipin the group will be placed at the Public Library,
and RCTC
Ways and Means:
- Community Days at Herberger's is November 15, 2008. The money we raise from this
event goes to the College is Possible program.
There are 2 or 3 times available to pre-sell tickets for the event. We need to sell 150
tickets. A table will be set up at the September meeting
to sell tickets, and sign up for the presale events. Each Interest Group leader will also
be given tickets to sell at each of the small group meetings held
each month.
Projects:
- Barb Cain will be getting information about the Apache Mall Evening of Giving. There
may be the opportunity to do gift wrapping at this event to raise money for
the Women's Shelter.
- AAUW is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Education Foundation. To raise
support for the foundation they are asking
for 500 gifts of $50 in 50 days. The gifts are to be donated by October 15th. There will
be a table at the September meeting where
members can make a donation to the Education Foundation fund.
Interest Groups:
- Each of the groups have been informed about having a table at the September meeting
to register, and give information about each group.
Old Business:
- Yolanda Rishovd moved that we give a donation of $250.00 for scholarships, to the
Bella Voce singers. The donation will be taken from the Purvis Fund.
The group will be performing at our May meeting. The motion was seconded by Kay
Morcomb. The motion passed unanimously
New Ideas:
- There was some discussion about having an informational booth downtown during
Thursdays on First.
- Pauline will look into the possibility of having a link on our Branch website to the State
website.
- Rosemary Bradshaw made a motion to adjourn. Kay Morcombe seconded the motion.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15.
